History of Fishplate

The first railway fishplate,
patented by William Adams and Robert Richardson in 1847

Fishplate was invented by William Bridges Adams, in May 1842, because of his dissatisfaction with the scarf joints and other systems of joining rails then in use. He noted that to form the scarf joint the rail was halved in thickness at its ends, where the stress was greatest. It was first deployed on the Eastern Counties Railway in 1844, but only as a wedge between the adjoining rails. Adams and Robert Richardson patented the invention in 1847, but in 1849 James Samuel, the engineer of the ECR developed fishplates that could be bolted to the rails.

In steel rail terminology, a fishplate, splice bar or joint bar is a metal bar that is bolted to the ends of two rails to join them together in a track. The name is derived from fish, a wooden bar with a curved profile used to strengthen a ship's mast. The top and bottom edges are tapered inwards so the device wedges itself between the top and bottom of the rail when it is bolted into place. In rail transport modelling, a fishplate is often a small copper or nickel silver plate that slips onto both rails to provide the functions of maintaining alignment and electrical continuity.

Rail fastening system

A rail fastening system is a means of fixing rails to railroad ties (United States) or sleepers (international). The terms rail anchors, tie plates, chairsand track fasteners are used to refer to rail parts or all of a rail fastening system. Various types of fastening have been used over the years.

Rail Clips

A variety of different types of heavy-duty rail clips are used to fasten the rails to the underlying base plate, one common one being the Pandrol fastener (Pandrol clip), named after its maker, which is shaped like a stubby paperclip. Another one is the Vossloh Tension Clamp.

The newer Pandrol fastclip is applied at right angles to the rail. Because the clip is captive, it has to be installed at the time of manufacture of the concrete sleeper.

Steel rail is the main component of the railway track, directly bear repetition and impact loads of rolling stock wheels. Therefore, rail steel requires adequate hardness, tensile strength, fatigue strength and toughness. Crane rail is a  specialty  steel rail, mainly  used  for  overhead  crane  runways  and

Crane rail differs from railroad rail in two respects:
1. The base width is always equal to the height of the rail (ex-ception– 135 lb. crane rail).
2. Heavier crane rail (104 lbs. and up) has a much thicker web than railroad rail, giving it a very distinctive section.
